英文名 (English name): Fairy Orchid, Narrow Habenaria

Status in China: Endangered (EN)

Description: Terrestrial orchids, 15-50 cm tall. Leaves 5-6, arising from the base of stem; leaf blade lanceolate or linear, 6-15 cm long and 1-1.8 cm wide, attenuate and stem-clasping at base. Racemes 8-12-flowered. Flowers yellow-green, dorsal sepal broad-ovate, 3 mm long, coherent with petals forming a hood, lateral ones reflexed, 4.5 mm long. Petals white, oblique-ovate, 3-8 mm long, lip yellow, 9-12 mm long, 3-lobed at base; lobes linear, adhering at its base to the column; spur slenderly cylindric, up to 9 mm long.

Distribution: Cape D'Aguilar, Aberdeen, Fanling, Shatin, Sha Tau Kok. Guangdong.

Habitat and Ecology: In forests or grassland on slopes. Flowering: Aug.

First discovered in 1857 from Aberdeen, Hong Kong Island, the plant is a rare species and has potential ornamental value. In Hong Kong, most localities of its occurrence are in Country Parks, so habitats of the plants are essentially protected. This species is also protected by the Forestry Regulations (Cap. 96 sub. leg.) and the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Cap. 586).
