Description: Evergreen trees; bark grey-green. Young shoots, petioles, abaxial surface of leaves, inflorescence, calyces and pods densely tomentose. Leaves odd-pinnate, petiole 4-9 mm long; leaflets 3-7, leathery, obovate-oblong, 6-12 cm long and 2-5 cm wide, apex apiculate, lateral nerves 12 pairs. Panicles terminal, to 20 cm long. Corolla papilionaceous, standard suborbicular, about 8 mm long, 1cm wide, apex emarginate, base clawed, wings oblong, about 1 cm long, keel falcate, about 1 cm long, base auriculate on one side; stamens 10. Pods elliptic to subglobular, 2.5-5 cm long, 2.5-3cm wide, turgid; 1-2 seeded; seeds brownish-red, square or globular, 1.4 cm in diam.
Distribution: Victoria Peak, Wong Chuk Hang, Tsiu Hang, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Ta Tit Yan, Tai Mo Shan. Guangdong.
Habitat and Ecology: In dense forest of valleys. Flowering: Jun-Jul.
This species was first collected from Happy Valley, Hong Kong Island in 1850. Wood is durable, strong, as good as teak. Timber extraction occurs elsewhere. In Hong Kong, some of the localities of its occurrence are in Country Parks under protection. Ex-situ conservation measures can be explored.
