英文名 (English name): Island Mahonia

Status in China: Endangered (EN)


Description: Evergreen shrubs, 1-7 m tall. Leaves odd-pinnate, oblong-elliptic, 15-42 cm long and 8-15 cm wide, with 12-20 pairs leaflets; leaflets ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, 2-10 cm long and 1-2.5 cm wide, base rounded, margin with 2-9 spiny teeth, apex cuspidate to acuminate, dark green above, pale yellowish green beneath. Racemes sometimes branched, in fascicles of 7-18, 9-25 cm long; bracts ovate; flowers golden yellow; sepals ovate to oblong; petals oblong, 4.5-6.6 mm long and 2-2.7 mm wide, base with 2 glands, apex acute; stamens 3-4 mm long, connectives slightly elongated, apex rounded or slightly mucronate; ovary 3.2-4 mm long, styles 0.5-1 mm long. Berries ovoid.
  

Distribution: Sunset Peak. Taiwan, Hainan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan and Xizang.
  
Habitat and ecology: In forests by streams. Flowering: Jun.-Sept.
  
It is a rare species of special value in scientific research. In Hong Kong, its distribution range is narrow and population size is small. However, the locality of occurrence is within Country Park under protection.
