英文名 (English name): Hainan Anneslea

Status in China: Near Threatened (NT)

Description: Evergreen small trees. Leaves leathery, oblong or elliptic, 8-15 cm long, 3.5-8 cm wide, apex obtuse, entire or denticulate near apex, lateral veins inconspicuous; petiole 1.5-2.5 cm long. Flowers bisexual, several ones terminal on apex of branchlets, pedicels 1-2 cm long; sepals 5, elliptic-ovate, 1 cm long, glabrous; petals 5, red or white, obovate, 6-8 mm long, base connate; stamens numerous; ovary semi-inferior. Fruit ovoid, 2-2.5 cm long, persistent calyx 1-1.3 cm long.
 
 
 








Distribution: Ma On Shan. Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi.


Habitat and ecology: In ravine forests and thickets. Flowering: Nov.-Dec.; fruiting: Jul.-Aug. of the following year.

The species is endemic to China and is thus of special botanical interests. In Hong Kong, the locality of its occurrence is within Country Park under protection. Seed collection for propagation or other ex-situ conservation measures could be explored.
